I Gained 13 Pounds Over the Summer!

By Seema, age 14, California

A few years ago my mother and I decided to take a trip to Rome, Italy. When we arrived I was about one hundred and fifteen pounds and five three. Not too bad. I was expecting to get a lot of exercise from all the walking we were going to do every day. I was wrong.

We arrived and were greeted with a large traditional Italian dinner. We sat down and ordered appetizers. The only thing, the appetizers wouldn't stop! They kept bringing more to the table. Eventually we had to ask them to stop. Now after all that food we ordered a first and second course! The couple next to us ate five times more than us and probably weighed five times less than me. I am still perplexed how people eat that much food and stay so thin.

Now imagine eating all that food for three weeks! For lunch some of us would have ice cream sandwiches ... literally. It was gelato in special bread and it was called lunch. By the end of the trip I got on the scale and I weighed 128 pounds. Not a good way to start the school year.

Over the summer please remember to exercise, even if it's for ten minutes a day, and try to eat somewhat healthy. I realize it's summer, but you really don't want to go back to school ten pounds heavier - it was pretty embarrassing. Now when I go on vacation I always remember to portion my food and do a couple hundred sit-ups a night. It really helps.

I hope you all have a great summer!
