My Favorite Singin' Gals

By Taylor, age 16, Ontario

I only listen to a few selected artists, but listen to them all the time. There is just something about their music that relates to my life and has real meaning.

Taylor Swift

I usually don't like country, but her music is so inspiring and realistic. When I hear any of her songs on the radio I immediately start to sing. Taylor usually writes her own music, which makes it so much more honest. She writes about her life, and that's what music should really be about. She is one of the reasons I write music and sing.

Miley Cyrus

Yes, I'm surprised I like her music. She writes it along with her dad, and it's just so out there. Her lyrics usually have a message, like "The Climb". You shouldn't make up reasons not to do something, but think of the reasons you should. Yes, life gets tough, but you've got to go at it head first. The song "I Miss You" is about her grandfather and his death. It's something we all go through, and to put that into lyrics is hard to do.

Avril Lavigne

She has many different lyrics to sing to. She can be soft, but at the same time rock. Her music deals with the drama all of us have to deal with. It's not something we can walk away from. When I first heard the song "Girlfriend", I thought about every girl in life who goes through that, when they're jealous of another girl and feel they deserve the guy. I usually listen to her music when I've had a tough day, so I know I'm not the only one going through it.

Britney Spears

Yikes! She was one of the best singers back in the day, then she had a meltdown, but her new album Circus is the first album where I like ALL the songs. She's just playing around and telling many different stories. I admire her because she got back on that horse after she fell off, and didn't give up, and that takes a lot of guts.
