Nightmare

The sun falls beyond the trees and paints the sky with purples and greens
Darkness settles across the horizon and night is awoken once more
The birds fold their wings and close their eyes
And creatures with drooling grins arise from their shadowy dens
Doors are locked and windows shut tight
Prayers are said and the light bids the world goodnight
The moon peers from behind the clouds
And the time has come for hunters' flight
First are the insects
The bed bugs with nasty bites
Then come the monsters
The boogeyman under beds
Next the sounds
The howls and screams
And finally the nightmares
Who toil and plunge children's dreams
For when night comes they feast on fears with delight
Their stomachs filled by the innocents' shrieks of fright
