Healthy Ways to Lose That Weight

By Whitney, age 16, New Jersey

Ever wonder what you would look like if you were skinny? I know. I have these thoughts often because in the media and commercials you hear about losing weight in a week. In magazine articles you see the lemon juice diet. And in ads for diet pills ... but do they work?

Me? I wouldn't try any of these methods because they're very unhealthy and can even be deadly, because you're really starving yourself, and your body needs nutrition.

Here are some ways to lose weight in a healthier way and still eat your favorite foods once in a while.

Proportions. Size really matters because unless you pay attention you may not realize you're doubling your intake - that's like extra pounds for nothing. Doctor Oz says, "Don't eat white bread because it's like you're digesting two candy bars." Eat a lot of fiber foods so you'll get full faster. If you like sweets, like I do, get them in hundred calorie pack snacks and get some yogurt.

Drink lots of water. I know that can be hard at times, but I just put a sugar-free Kool-Aid packet in the bottle of water and I just love it. I drink V8 to get two servings of vegetables, because there are some vegetables I don't like.

Also, and this is very important - Eat dinner before seven o clock, because it's not good eating late at night. Eat lots of fruit because it's good for you and it has lots of fiber. My whole family and I are eating healthier now because of what we saw on the Oprah show where this woman with diabetes lost her leg due to complications from her diabetes. It was a wake up call because my mom and I both have diabetes. I have type 1 and my mom has type 2, and we weren't eating healthy like we were supposed to.

I really hope the best for you, and keep being encouraged - if I can do it you can too!
