Winter 2010's Top Trends

By Stephanie, age 22, New York

With the holidays on the way and winter in full swing it's time to update your closet. Pack away those sun dresses and shorts to make way for this winter's hottest trends. This winter seems to be all about embellishments, layering, and 1950s inspired looks. So get out your favorite vintage gear. However, the season isn't without its letdowns. Leggings are out, but that's ok; they have been replaced with cute colored and patterned opaque tights.

Colors

The colors for the season are monochromatic tones of soft grays, deep blues, rich browns, scarlet red, basic black, and muted tones of cream and taupe. I encourage everyone to play with colors when layering. Try a rust colored dress with a cream scarf and brown jacket.

Lots of Leather

Edgy black leather really made a statement on the New York and Paris runways this season in the form of belted coats, a-line skirts, and especially in military inspired jackets. The "flying jacket", a 1940's-50's inspired leather jacket with sheepskin lining, has become extremely popular, and is a seasonal must-have.

Not really a fan of a whole leather outfit? Well, try a leather cuff bracelet. This season there will be many leather accessories as well. Try a pair of long leather gloves, or a cute leather belt. Leather handbags are always in style and come in a variety of looks. Don't want a plain leather bag? Try one with cute decorative studding or silver hardware.

Madden Girl Shoes, Zoiiee Boots are available for $89.00 at www.macys.com or your local store.

Fun Textures

Textures are also very "in" this winter. Adding different textures to your wardrobe will add an element of sophistication. Look into a cute velvet party dress or a textured wool blazer at the local thrift store. Tweed is timeless and a great closet staple. If you're looking for luxurious knits, try an oversized loose sweater.

Carson stretch twill skinny jeans are available for $32.90 - $37.90 at www.alloy.com.

You can also add texture with accessories as well. Try layering different textured scarves, or a fun wool hat. Knit gloves are a winter staple that are both cute and needed. Try lace gloves when going out on the town.

Fabulous Faux Fur

Faux fur is becoming remarkably popular this winter. The Milan runway was covered with fur vests and shrugs. Add a fur cape to your evening outfit to give it an instant glam factor. Not only is faux fur sexy, it is also cozy and warm. Don't be afraid to experiment with fun patterns.

(Minus the) Fur Leopard Coat is available for $128.00 at www.express.com or your local store.

Add Some Accessories

The big trend in accessories seems to be "the more embellished the better," whether it be lace, brocade, velvet, or jewels. From sequins to studs, you can see them everywhere - on shoes, handbags, belts, and even jewelry. I found a vintage sequin purse I just loved for only $5.00 at a local Goodwill. Long chains, delicate charms, large pendants, and loop earrings are also very "in" this winter. Thigh high boots and funky booties always seem to be in style, but the boots currently available are so gorgeous!

Horizontal and slanted striped tights are available for $5.80 at www.forever21.com or your local store.

Metal studded suedette cuff boots are available for $32.80 at www.forever21.com or your local store.

I don't know about you, but I can't wait to get to the mall! With so many hot new trends, I will have a new outfit for every day this winter. Go forth, readers, and be fashionable!
