REAL LIFE: COLLEGE

College: My Worst Nightmare

By Karina, age 18, Texas

Now, don't let the title fool you. I REALLY can't wait to go to college. I REALLY can't wait to get out of high school and have my independence. The thing I hate is figuring it out, having people ask me every other second of my life where I plan on going, and worrying about financial issues.

The main thing is my parents. Always asking, pushing, pulling, and overall just plain being annoying. I'm not saying I don't love them or appreciate them, because I do; I just want them to chill a little bit. They want me to stay in state and go to a private school. However, I really want to go out of state and don't want to go to ANY of the colleges they want me to attend. Ugh. It's so difficult and confusing. Also, I really don't want to talk about our disagreements right after I get home from really late basketball practices. I just want to sleep. No offense or anything.

And then, "Where are you attending school next year?" "Where have you been accepted?" "What are you majoring in?" "How come you don't know where you are going to college?" "How come (this or that)?" You know what? It's not your business. I will inform you when I myself know what I am doing. I'm really not trying to be mean, or act mean, it's just ... when this has been going on since the middle of most students' junior year (I feel ya, seniors) it just gets tiring. Finally, I have just gone to lying. It's more fun that way. "Yes, I am attending the University of Aboogada, and plan on majoring in underwater basket weaving. I'm SOOOO excited!!" Ha, take that, sucka!

And then, what everyone worries about - money. How am I going to pay this RIDICULOUS amount of money to attend this college?? Well, I don't know the answer yet. I hope to get financial aid, some scholarships, loans, maybe some help from my parents. Oh, how stressful.

But then, I remember ... I'M GOING TO FREAKING COLLEGE! And I can't wait! Everything is going to be worth it. Eventually, I will figure out what I want to do with my life, what I want to major in, and where I plan on going to college.

So, students, don't worry. Take a chill pill. Think of the bigger picture. Insert any other cliche that will help. :) But seriously, it can work out. I will make it. You will make it. WE WILL MAKE IT!

Love, Karina, a friend from Texas
