Valentine's Day for Single Girls

By Joanna, age 20, South Wales, United Kingdom

It's Valentine's Day. You're single, and everywhere you look there are couples. It sucks, but why not round up some of your other single girlfriends and have a girl's night in?

I say 'girl's night in' because a few years ago I thought it would be a brilliant idea if us single girls got together and went out for a meal and evening out. However, that turned out to be a bit of a disaster seeing as we all overlooked the fact that on Valentine's Day restaurants and pretty much everywhere are full of couples!

I think Valentine's Day, although it's a lovely opportunity to show you care, is slightly overrated, and I'm not saying that from a bitter point of view either. If you're with someone, it should be obvious that you care on more days of the year than just one!

But to all single SDM readers, I recommend having a girly night in with some films and some gossip. Don't pick films that are overly romantic if you're really, really bugged about not having a boyfriend though! Stick with comedy films or movies with some good looking actors, and make sure you all have a laugh. This is the key to having a great Valentine's Day without a date! The worst feeling is feeling like you're alone when everyone else is with someone, so don't stay at home moping because you're single; be determined to have a good night, and remember that just because they're together, not all couples are happy. Chances are, you'll be having a better time with your friends than a lot of couples who appear happy on the surface but are actually falling apart.

There's plenty of time to worry about finding a boyfriend. The old cliché that "you'll fall in love when you least expect it" is, in my experience, true. Enjoy being a teenager whilst you can. Be carefree and laugh, and in the end, finding a boyfriend will take care of itself!
