Blue Lips and Rhombus Eyes
By Krista, age 17, Massachusetts
My reflection is perceived as distorted and inadequate.I want to peel off freckles and pluck out eyelashes;
send them off in a sealed envelope without
an address, or any marking from the alphabet.
In today's society, the qualifications to be seen as "beautiful"
have erupted to features and attributes
almost impossible to maintain, let alone inherit.
We indulge ourselves in cryptic collages
of the chiseled nose, collagen lip, photo-shopped eye.
Thousands of dollars later and you too
can amplify the uptight rules of the luxurious life.
You'll continue to behave as if beauty finds your salvation.
I'll continue to add turpentine to my foundation to resemble
a creature one makeover less startling than a pterodactyl.
