Bitter Sweet Step
By Rachel, age 26, Connecticut
Walking along the shore, where the water meets the sandCool water washes over my feet
Breathing in the salty air
The breeze blows through my hair
The warm sunlight gently kisses my face
Remembering a day gone by
You and I
Side by side your arm around mine
I lean into you
You whisper softly "I Love You"
I look up at you and smile "I love you too"
Both of us looking out to where the sea meets the sky, that's where you say some day you want to be
That day came too soon
One summer then another and still more have come
five years later I walk along the same beach once more alone and yet I feel you with me still
Peace wraps around me, around my heart, like a thick warm blanket on a cold day
As I gaze out to where heaven and earth touch one another and I know you are there
Until it is my time to join you I will walk this beach each and every summer, never forgetting the days we spent together
The air is cool now as day fades into evening
Exhale
