Featured Gold Star Writer Bio

I started writing for Sweet Designs Magazine in August 2010. I was so excited that Stephanie invited me to become a staff writer because I was on crutches last summer and really bored. It's been a great experience. Writing is one of my passions and I'm glad I have a place to express myself.

I am Dutch Irish and I have a twin brother. My grandmother recently self-published a book about growing up as an Irish girl in New York City during the Great Depression. It's wonderful to have part of our family history in book form.

My friends and I started a creative writing club in high school. It was great experience to meet new people and discuss our different writing styles, although I did get a little tired of fan fiction.

I love watching all sorts of movies but my favorite genres are romantic comedies and action flicks. Some of my favorites include: The Princess Bride, Benny and Joon, 500 Days of Summer, Moonstruck, When Harry Met Sally, August Rush, Raising Arizona, Last of the Mohicans, Die Hard, and Terminator. I appreciate a creative plot that isn't cliche´d and action with a purpose. I'm not really into unnecessary violence or horror films.

I am open to a lot of different types of music, but I especially love the 80s. I enjoy Heart, Meat Loaf, Bon Jovi, Billy Idol, Foreigner, Journey, and Bonnie Tyler. Part of the reason I love the 80s is because I feel like a lot of music these days is cynical and self-centered, whereas the 80s were dramatic and romantic. And who wouldn't love the crazy hair? However, I do appreciate today's music, especially Indie artists.

I have a penchant for hats and boots. I don't need to buy expensive clothes, but I love to search thrift stores to create unique outfits. I even bought my prom dress secondhand.

Plays and musical theatre is another of my passions. I enjoy Shakespeare's plays. Two favorites are Much Ado about Nothing and The Taming of the Shrew. I also like musical theatre and have seen Grease, Cats, Wicked, and The Phantom of the Opera. Surprisingly, I've even been to the opera twice. My favorite opera is Carmen.

I love to read as much as I love to write. My tastes are eclectic, ranging from Jane Austen and Charlotte and Emily Bronte to more contemporary authors, like Robin McKinley and Sarah Dessen. While some critics say young adult fiction is frivolous, I feel authors have to be more creative when they omit the unnecessary sex and violence that is often in adult fiction plots.

My favorite sports are swimming and boxing. I love exercising. If I don't do it every day I get antsy and moody. I've even tried Zumba. It's a lot of fun, but takes a while to learn all the dance steps. I'm kind of a health nut and really dislike fast food.

I am in college, majoring in English, with a minor in Journalism. Right now my tentative career plans are to either become a writer or a lawyer, but that could always change. I didn't get into my first choice school so I went to Junior College for one semester. It was such a great experience that when I finally was accepted into the school of my choice, I continued to take some of my classes at Junior College.

Please check out my movie reviews of Jane Eyre (2011) and Thor (2011) in this issue.
