Blackberry Fever

By Ranolene, age 16, South Africa

Look out, everyone, Blackberry fever is hitting this generation worse than swine flu!!

Black, white, silver, purple and red. No, these are not the colours of the rainbow; these are the colours you can get your Blackberry in!

These smart yet pricey phones are held tightly in every two out of three teenagers' hands. I know that it's good to have a device in the colour of your choice that has over 1,000 applications, free unlimited internet usage, and can store up to five hundred songs.

But even though the Blackberry offers all this and so much more, there are parents who ask the question: "Is this device going to interfere with our kids' education and social life?" Sure, kids can have a social life on social networking sites, but what about their education? Studies prove that most teenagers prefer to be locked up in their rooms with a phone in hand to reading a book.

Sure, technology is being improved with these devices, but is it good for our generation??

I know we can't put a stop to technology, but we can limit ourselves to the use of it. For example, after school, we could come home and take half an hour to read our messages, then do our homework, and then spend the rest of the day with our devices! :)
