Start Something New

It's Spring - time to spring clean! Spring cleaning usually makes you think of getting rid of things, but this year I'm taking a different view on it and taking up a few things.

It's lent, which traditionally means giving up something you enjoy. But how to decide what to give up?

The act of giving something up should be a selfless act to reflect the roots of the tradition, and what could be more selfless than giving up your time?

Until I started volunteering for charity I didn't realise the amount of work that charities do behind the scenes to help people. Whether it's spending half an hour on the phone talking to someone who needs help in whatever way, or compiling a database, everything that happens in a charity office - the things that no one thinks about - have a huge impact on people across the country and around the world.

No matter what your passion is - an animal charity, a mental health charity, Samaritans - the amount that people benefit from the volunteers that help out here should never be underestimated. So give up some spare time and help someone this lent.
